Plague

This project will use cutting edge biotechnology to create an artwork considering the frontiers between the natural and the artificial, between life and death, between health and disease, and between different art media. The final result will be a rice field to be displayed in an exhibition space, where wild type rice sensitive to a pathogen will be cultured together with rice engineered to be resistant to that disease. Throughout the exhibition the wild type rice plants inoculated with the pathogen will progressively decay and die, revealing a word or phrase designed with the resistant plants.
